This book is a provocative manifesto of disruptive thinking about cyber security. It presents cutting-edge thinking and professional reflection and is designed to be a source of ideas and approaches that can be adopted for application in the real world by those who recognize that conventional ways of defining and considering cyber-attack are insufficient. All of the authors believe that the term “cyber” must be urgently wrestled back from the technologists, cyber security professionals, consultancies and corporate silos that have hijacked it (seemingly without any resistance) and rendered the term essentially meaningless. The authors write from applied and often unique experiences in a range of commercial, consulting, state and defense environments. Many of the authors of this volume have direct experience of inflicting, reporting on and protecting organizations from such effects, and also have knowledge of taking the challenge to additional levels. Most consultancies, academics and “experts” don’t live in the real world, are content with operating in the commoditised world of cyber-technical security and don’t have the intellectual capacity to understand, engage with or monetize this more challenging reality. This book is intended to help organizations improve preparedness for the established cyber world reality.

I'm an expert in understanding how people can be both a source of susceptibility or a reservoir of resilience. I have a unique track record in testing systems, personnel, plans and processes - finding weakness and supporting clients in treating it. As the first anthropologist to work for the UK government (1998), an early proponent of Social Network Analysis and unconventional approaches - my applied research in Information Warfare provides me with unique expertise in understanding what defences are needed to protect decision-makers (and the socio-technical systems they rely on) from malign influence.

I am a thought-leader in cyber-security, with a track record of operating at National Strategic level in 10 Downing Street, with the Governor of the Bank of England and the Boards of defence and security agencies from a Cabinet Office post of National Strategic impact whilst remaining head of a national research capability in Influence Activity. I later ran a small consultancy in the risk and resilience space (retaining prestigious government clients and adding private sector customers), before returning to the university sector in 2010.

I am an academic and published author of international standing in cyber-security, especially the human aspects that comprise 95% of the threat - according to IBM. I also offer services and thought leadership around business continuity, risk surfacing & engagement, reliable and agile strategic and operational performance under pressure and the capability of developing new policy and operational options at speed.

I continue to advise and train unique and elite military and commercial clients as well as pursue research leadership with a cluster of PhD, DBA and MBA students under supervision and win research funding.
